A fluoride-free toothpaste with documented oral health ingredients. Xylitol inhibits cavity-causing bacteria. Coconut oil (lauric acid) is antibacterial. Clove contains eugenol, which has analgesic and antibacterial properties used in actual dental procedures. Neem powder is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory. Bentonite clay acts as a mild abrasive to clean teeth — it is not a "detoxifier" in any evidence-based sense.
Note: This toothpaste does not contain fluoride, which is the most evidence-backed ingredient for cavity prevention. Use it as a conscious fluoride-free alternative, or alongside fluoride toothpaste.
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp bentonite clay powder
- 1 tbsp extra virgin coconut oil
- 1 tsp xylitol
- ½ tsp ground cloves
- ½ tsp neem powder
- 10 drops food-grade peppermint essential oil
Method
Mix
- Combine all dry ingredients (clay, xylitol, cloves, neem) in a small bowl.
- Add coconut oil — warm slightly first if solid.
- Add peppermint oil and stir thoroughly to combine.
- Transfer to a small glass jar.
Use
- Scoop a small amount onto a wet toothbrush using a clean spatula or spoon.
- Brush for 2 minutes as normal.
- The texture and taste differ from commercial toothpaste — it takes a few uses to adjust.
Storage
- Airtight glass jar at room temperature: up to 3 months.
- Use a clean utensil to scoop — fingers introduce bacteria.
Notes
- Do not use metal utensils with bentonite clay — it binds to metal ions. Use wood, silicone, or plastic.
- Clove is the strongest flavor. Reduce to ¼ tsp if too intense.
- Children should not use this without dental guidance — fluoride toothpaste is recommended for developing teeth.
- If xylitol is unavailable, omit it. The other ingredients still provide cleaning and antibacterial action.
