Kadha (Immunity Decoction)
Kadha is a traditional Indian herbal decoction — spices and herbs boiled hard in water to pull out their medicinal compounds, drunk hot to ward off and ease colds, coughs, and sore throats. Unlike a steeped tea, a kadha is simmered for 10 to 15 minutes, which is what makes it potent and slightly bitter. It became a household staple during cold season for good reason: the ingredients — tulsi, ginger, black pepper, cinnamon, clove — each carry antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory properties. This is a supportive comfort remedy, not a cure.
Ingredients
- 2 cups water
- 8 to 10 fresh tulsi (holy basil) leaves — or 1 teaspoon dried
- 1 inch fresh ginger, crushed (or 1/2 teaspoon ground)
- 4 to 5 black peppercorns, crushed
- 1 small cinnamon stick (or 1/2 teaspoon ground)
- 2 cloves
- 2 green cardamom pods, crushed (optional)
- 1 teaspoon honey, to taste (added at the end)
- Squeeze of lemon (optional)
Method
Simmer
- Add the water, tulsi, ginger, peppercorns, cinnamon, cloves, and cardamom to a saucepan.
- Bring to a boil, then lower to a steady simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, until the liquid reduces to roughly 1 to 1.5 cups and turns golden-brown and aromatic. The longer simmer is what makes a kadha a kadha.
Strain and finish
- Strain into a cup. Let it cool for a minute, then stir in honey and a squeeze of lemon if using (never boil honey — add it off the heat).
- Sip hot, ideally 1 to 2 cups a day during cold season or when you feel something coming on.
Variations
- With jaggery — simmer in a teaspoon of grated jaggery instead of honey for a traditional sweeter, mineral-rich version (jaggery can be cooked; honey cannot).
- Stronger for a cough — add 1/4 teaspoon turmeric and a pinch of mulethi (licorice root).
- Giloy kadha — add a piece of giloy stem, a classic immunity addition if you have access to it.
Notes
- Bitter is normal — a proper kadha is assertive and slightly bitter from the long simmer and the pepper/clove. Honey and lemon soften it; don't over-sweeten.
- Black pepper is functional — it aids absorption of the other compounds and adds a warming heat that helps with congestion.
- Don't overdo it — kadha is potent; 1 to 2 cups a day is plenty. Too much, too often can irritate the stomach because of the strong spices.
