Cold Milk & Banana Acidity Soother
Two of the fastest, gentlest things to reach for when acidity or heartburn flares: plain cold milk and a ripe banana. Both work by the same mechanism — they're mildly alkaline and they physically coat and buffer an over-acidic stomach, calming the burn quickly without any prep. This is the "I feel it right now" remedy, as opposed to the sipped Acidity Cooler (Saunf-Dhania Water) you'd drink preventively. See the Home Remedies Guide for how acidity (a cooling problem) differs from bloating (a warming one).
Cold Milk
- 1/2 to 1 cup plain milk, cold (not flavored, not hot)
- Sip slowly, cold and plain. The milk's proteins and mild alkalinity buffer stomach acid and coat the irritated lining for quick relief.
- Don't gulp a large amount — a modest cup is enough; too much can prompt a rebound of acid later.
Ripe Banana
- 1 ripe banana
- Eat a ripe banana slowly. Bananas are alkaline, low-acid, and contain pectin, which helps settle the stomach and coat the lining.
- Works well on an empty stomach or between meals when the burn starts.
Notes
- Cold, not hot — for acidity you want cooling and soothing; warm milk is comforting but less immediately buffering, and some people find it less effective for reflux.
- Plain only — skip chocolate, coffee, or added spice; those can aggravate acidity.
- Quick relief, not a cure — these soothe a flare fast but don't treat the cause. For a preventive sipping remedy use the Acidity Cooler (Saunf-Dhania Water); for frequent or severe heartburn, see a doctor.
- Lactose-sensitive? — a banana alone, or a few almonds, gives similar alkaline-buffering relief without dairy.
