Acidity Cooler (Saunf-Dhania Water)
A cooling fennel-and-coriander-seed water for acidity and heartburn — the burning, sour-reflux feeling that comes from too much stomach acid. This is a different problem from bloating and gas (that's trapped air and fullness), and it wants a different remedy: where gas responds to warming, carminative spices, acidity responds to cooling ones. Fennel (saunf) and coriander (dhania) seeds are both cooling in the Ayurvedic sense and gently settle an over-acidic, irritated stomach. Unlike the warming Bloating Tea, this is drunk at room temperature or cool. (The Home Remedies Guide explains this warming-vs-cooling principle and which remedy suits which complaint.)
Bloating vs. acidity — which remedy? If you feel full, gassy, distended → that's bloating; reach for Bloating Tea, Jeera & Ajwain Water, or CCF Tea (Cumin-Coriander-Fennel). If you feel a burning, sour, rising sensation → that's acidity; this cooler is the one.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon fennel seeds (saunf)
- 1 tablespoon coriander seeds (dhania)
- 2 cups water
- 1 teaspoon rock sugar (mishri) or regular sugar, to taste (optional)
Method
Steep (overnight method — best)
- Lightly crush the fennel and coriander seeds and add them to the water in a jar.
- Cover and leave at room temperature overnight (or at least 4 hours). The water draws out the cooling compounds without heat.
- Strain, stir in rock sugar if using, and sip at room temperature or slightly cool.
Quick method (simmer, then cool)
- Boil the seeds in the water for 3 to 4 minutes, then turn off the heat and let it steep and cool completely — don't drink it hot, as heat works against the cooling effect.
- Strain and sweeten lightly if desired.
Variations
- Coriander (dhania) seed water — use coriander seeds alone (2 tablespoons in 2 cups water) and skip the fennel. Coriander-seed water is a traditional single-ingredient cooling remedy for acidity and a hot stomach; mild, clean-tasting, and good first thing in the morning.
- Fennel (saunf) seed water — fennel alone, same method; sweeter and more aromatic.
- Both single-seed versions work the same way as the combined cooler — the two-seed blend just gives a rounder flavor.
Notes
- Serve cool, not hot — the cooling quality is the point for acidity. A warm brew suits gas and bloating, not reflux.
- Rock sugar (mishri) is traditional and itself considered cooling; it also takes the edge off without irritating the stomach the way very sour or spicy additions can.
- Avoid lemon/salt here — unlike a digestive bloating drink, you don't want acid or strong spice when the problem is already too much acid.
- When to drink — between meals, or when you feel the burn starting. For frequent or severe heartburn, see a doctor; this is a mild soother, not a treatment for reflux disease.
