Sleep Tonic (Nutmeg Milk)
A warm milk with a whisper of nutmeg — one of the oldest and simplest bedtime remedies. Nutmeg contains compounds traditionally used as a mild sedative, and in small amounts it has a calming, drowsy effect that pairs with the comfort of warm milk. The key word is small: a tiny grating soothes, but too much nutmeg is unpleasant and, in large quantities, genuinely not safe — so this is a pinch, not a spoonful.
Ingredients
- 1 cup milk (dairy, or oat/almond)
- 1 to 2 gratings of fresh nutmeg (about 1/8 teaspoon, no more)
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
- 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup, to taste
- Pinch of ground cardamom (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon ashwagandha powder (optional, see notes)
Method
Warm and spice
- Gently warm the milk in a small saucepan until steaming, not boiling.
- Whisk in the nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, and ashwagandha if using. Keep the nutmeg to a tiny amount — 1 to 2 gratings is the whole dose.
Sweeten and sip
- Take off the heat, let it cool for a minute, then stir in the honey (adding it off the heat preserves its qualities).
- Drink warm, about 30 to 45 minutes before bed.
Notes
- Nutmeg dose discipline: a tiny grating is calming; more than about 1/8 teaspoon tastes harsh, and large amounts (tablespoons) are toxic. Stay at a pinch — this is a remedy, not a flavor-forward drink.
- Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb traditionally used for stress and sleep. It's optional and has an earthy, slightly bitter taste the honey helps mask. Skip it if you don't have it; the nutmeg-milk base works on its own.
- Why warm milk: the ritual and warmth are as much the point as any compound — a consistent wind-down cue helps signal sleep.
- Related: a richer bedtime option is Badam Milk (Kesar Badam Doodh) (saffron-almond milk), which is also traditionally calming.
