Ingredients
- 3 medium ripe avocados (or 4 small)
- 1 firm tomato, finely diced
- 1/2 red onion, finely diced
- Juice of 1 lime
- Salt and pepper to taste
To finish
- Fresh cilantro, chopped (optional)
- 1 jalapeño, finely diced (optional, for heat)
- 1 clove garlic, minced (optional)
Method
Mash
- Halve and pit the avocados. Scoop flesh into a bowl.
- Mash with a fork to your preferred texture — chunky or smooth.
- Add lime juice immediately and stir through.
- Fold in tomato, onion, and any optional add-ins.
- Season with salt and pepper. Taste and adjust lime.
Storage
- Same day: Cover with cling wrap pressed directly onto the surface. Good for a few hours.
- Overnight: Place an avocado pit in the bowl and press cling wrap directly onto the surface. Still best same day.
- Browning is natural — scrape off the brown layer, the green underneath is fine.
Variations
- Chunky — mash avocado very roughly, dice everything larger.
- Smooth — blend until creamy; good as a spread.
- Spicy — add jalapeño and a pinch of cayenne.
